Chula Vista Tournament
On Saturday Nov. 23rd, 3 MVHS robotics teams traveled to Otay Ranch High School to compete in our
first tournament of the year. There were 33 teams mostly from San Diego with a few from LA and a
couple from Arizona. This year in “Toss Up” the goal is to get as many of your colored balls (beach balls and bucky balls) in the scoring zone and 24” goals as possible. In the attached pics our robots have the numbers 569A, 569B, and 569C on them. Below are the results as well as the members of each team:
Team 569A had a strong robot and was 12th out of 33 teams after the 6 qualifying matches. Our
very own Team 569B ended up picking them as an alliance partner for the playoffs. Team 569B and
569A clawed their way into the finals where they lost in the best of 3 format in 3 matches by 2 points. It was a heartbreaking loss but everyone on our team left with their heads held high knowing what a great performance they put on. In addition to their Tournament Finalist trophy, Team 569A also won the
Think Award for their consistency when it came to the autonomous portion of the game…in English this
means we had some of the best computer programmers at the competition.
Team 569B finished 1st out of 33 teams in the qualifying rounds. This in itself is a great
accomplishment! The paragraph above sums up their heartbreaking loss in the finals with Team
569A. Team 569B did leave with a Tournament Finalist trophy.
Team 569C finished the qualifying rounds in 8th place out of 33 teams. They ended up being the 4th seeded alliance in the playoffs but were unfortunately defeated in the quarterfinals. However they
did not walk away empty handed as they won the Innovate Award, which is given to the team that the
most “Innovative” single design feature on their robot which was their pneumatic ball throwing device.
For our first tournament of the year it was a great showing. Each team left with at least one award and
we were 2 points away from having 2 teams qualify for the state championships in our very first outing
of the season.
